Mosses Like It Rough—Growth Form Specific Responses

چکیده
Micro-relief heterogeneity can lead to substantial variability in microclimate and hence niche opportunities on a small scale. We explored the relationship between plant species richness and small-scale heterogeneity of micro-relief on the subtropical island of La Palma, Canary Islands. Overall, we sampled 40 plots in laurel and pine forests at four altitudinal bands. Species richness was recorded separately for various growth forms (i.e., mosses, herbaceous and woody plants). Site conditions such as altitude, slope, aspect, and tree density were measured. Micro-relief heterogeneity was characterized by surface structure and a subsequently derived surface heterogeneity index. The effect of micro-relief heterogeneity on species richness was analysed by means of linear mixed effect models and variance partitioning. Effects of micro-relief heterogeneity on species richness varied considerably between growth forms. While moss richness was affected significantly by micro-relief heterogeneity, herbaceous and woody plants richness responded mainly to larger-scale site conditions such as aspect and tree density. Our results stress the importance of small-scale relief heterogeneity for the explanation of spatial patterns of OPEN ACCESS Diversity 2012, 4 60 species richness. This poses new challenges as small-scale heterogeneity is largely underrepresented, e.g. with regard to its application in species distribution models.

Effect of Physical Form of Diet on Growth Performance and Immune Responses of Broilers under Stress Induced by Carbon Tetrachloride
This study was conducted to examine the effects of physical form of diet on humoral and cellular immune responses in broiler chickens exposed to carbon tetrachloride stress in days 10 to 42 of age. The 2×3 factorial experiment performed in a randomized complete block design with 468 broilers in 6 treatments and 6 replicates of 13 birds each. The treatments consisted combinations of a grower d...

Female and male reproductive tracts are of interest sites to study of immune system because they encounter specific infections such as those are sexually transmitted. Furthermore, female reproductive tract is in close contact with allogenic sperms and transmitted microorganisms during intercourse and semi allogenic fetus during pregnancy. In mammals, there are two types of immune responses, the...

Cultural heritage has always been the focus of many civilizations and therefore, it needs to be preserved for future generations. From prehistoric times, when grandeur and beauty were the aims of architecture, stone was the most widely used durable material. Biodeterioration of the stone monuments, one of the most important causes for the loss of the cultural heritage, is defined as any undesir...

Mosses (Musci, Bryophytaea) are one of the oldest groups of land plants present among the earth’s flora. They originated 500 million years ago (for a recent discussion of the time scale involved, see Heckman et al., 2001) and are currently represented by approximately 10,000 species that colonize diverse habitats that range from high mountains to deep forests and from Antarctica to deserts. Evo...
متن کاملMultiple innovations underpinned branching form diversification in mosses
Broad-scale evolutionary comparisons have shown that branching forms arose by convergence in vascular plants and bryophytes, but the trajectory of branching form diversification in bryophytes is unclear. Mosses are the most species-rich bryophyte lineage and two sub-groups are circumscribed by alternative reproductive organ placements. In one, reproductive organs form apically, terminating grow...
